The tire and wheel transition should not be under-looked when focusing on aero.

As a mechanical engineer and cyclist, I spend a lot of time thinking about aerodynamics and optimizations on the bike. With that being said, I think an often under-looked optimization on road bikes is the interaction between the tire and the outside of the rim. The tire and wheel on a bike is in engineering terms called the "leading-edge". The leading edge is important for aerodynamics because it strongly influences downstream airflow behavior and the overall drag of a system.
